Reality
I know I'm not fully plugged into the world, but why does it seem that despite the biggest conflict in Europe in my life that the world seems almost entirely united...except US Republicans?
The world has shown that they want to defend democracy, albeit to different extremes and willingness to put their own people at risk. I still get the feeling that the world democracies are finally united like they've never been before. They are united in issuing sanctions and have rallied behind Ukraine.
To be clear no one has stepped in to formally defend the country, but idon't think there has been this unity in Europe in history. There is a clear enemy that cares nothing for diplomacy. This enemy is clearly a threat to the world. The world has recognized that and is starting to take action, even if it may be too little too late for a democracy that has stood up to an authoratarian regime.
Meanwhile back on the homeland, political leaders have been bending over backwards to appease this authoritarian. They have asked "why should I be afraid of Putin?" They have asked "what is the impact to America?" One significant leader was quoted as saying the invasion was "genius" and really "savvy".
These quotes have been broadcast throughout Russia as proof that their invasion is completely justified. So spare me your takes of Biden being weak. The obvious fact is that the "man" heralded as a strong man is in fact the enabler that has led to mass death and an anti-democratic movement in the US.
No matter what you think of Biden, he has rallied NATO/European allies in this time of significant conflict. You can argue that he didn't do enough, but the EU/NATO have never been more united.
I believe a huge possible reason for the delay in EU/NATO response to a vulnerable Democracy being attacked was the full weakness of Trump. For all bluster that he would blow out, he would make you his best friend if you complimented him. It doesn't take a genius to notice that (sorry Putin).
Trump tore down the alliances that the US has enjoyed so much that it would take years or a genuine crisis with a real leader to heal. Biden has clearly fit that role. He knows diplomacy and is executing it well. He isn't being in charge, but he is guiding. He is geing the anti-Trump...what the world needs.
I voted for Biden in part because he was not Trump, I thought he was what we needed, and probably wouldn't be a consequential president. History is still obviously evolving, but this presidency is quickly proving to be the most consequential of my lifetime.
Between convincing Americans that a vaccine to save lives from the deadliest disease ever known to man, and being the loudest voice in the room trying to communicate with NATO, rather than going in guns a-blazing? Negotiating, and ensuring that our allies are in agreement with the next moves, whether its sanctions or war. This guy has done an astounding job. I get that there are criticisms, there is always more you can do, or something that could have been done.
