Pissed off at the world
Why is
it that we as humans pretend to care about those around us, but when there is
something we can actually do we say “no I’m not willing to put your life above
my own freedom”? I think we’re all aware of the Good Samaritan, in some form or
the other, but we as a society aren’t willing to be the Good Samaritan. No, we
expect everyone to fend for themselves, to figure out what’s best for them. We
never consider the fact that what’s best for ourselves might be the best for
everyone.
People
are still refusing to wear masks, despite the fact that all evidence says it’s
best for everyone. Both the person exhaling and the person nearby breathing the
same air. They claim it is a restriction on their rights. These people are so
incredibly deranged. By not wearing a mask you are putting others lives at
risk. Sure, you might not exhibit any symptoms, it doesn’t mean that you aren’t
a carrier. It doesn’t mean that you can’t pick up the disease. It means you are
less likely to pick it up, and there is still the chance you can transmit the
disease to those you encounter. You have to be an incredibly selfish and ignorant
person to think otherwise. You have a responsibility to all of your fellow
humans.
I get
that the vaccine is still technically on an experimental vaccine, so there
should naturally be some hesitancy. However, millions of people have been vaccinated
worldwide. To continue to claim that there are questions about the safety of
the vaccine at this point simply means that you value yourself over the lives
of those around you. You simply cannot claim that the lives of others matter to
you.
Is it possible
that we put the lives of others above ourselves? Or are we at the point where
we as a society have said “Fuck it, everyone else can screw it”? I’m at my wits
end being raised on Christianity and the “Golden rule”. It would seem that no
one thinks of anyone other than themselves. They put themselves first and
foremost, if something inconveniences them it’s a huge deal. There is no
thinking about how it could affect others. Hell, they just assume its natural
or unconstitutional.
Absolutely
nothing will change until people learn to accept that what is good for them
might not be good for everyone. That there are people who don’t benefit from a
seemingly good bill. There is a lot to consider to any change, no matter how
small it can be. You can make a change with the best intensions, but there is
the chance that you’ve screwed an entire population over.
Diversity
and understanding is the answer. You’re not going to agree on every topic, why
would you? That makes no sense at all. However, you should gain a better
understanding of what makes people tick. What is important to them. What is
good policy. If you fail on this basic principle, what ground do you have to build
on? You are forcing your will on others who don’t want it.
I hear
constantly that those on the left are promoting socialism, and those on the
right are promoting fascism. Neither
side will agree or admit to these things. Would it be possible to say that
there are things both sides agree on? And that these perceptions are healthy? That
they lead to discussions that will help the country grow? Am I the only one who
can see the benefits of this talk? Are we destined to just agree with who we
align? Are we capable of communicating with each other and working through our
differences? Right now, I’d say we aren’t. We are programmed to hate. We will
never agree with anyone who differs from our opinion.
This is why we continue to
allow mass shootings, and mass gatherings during a pandemic. We refuse to
decide what is best for the greater good. We insist that what is best for us,
has to be best for everyone. We refuse to believe that some restrictions for
the best of us will prevent the worst of us from doing something horrible. We
simply expect that we are all good at heart, we don’t expect that there are
those of us that struggle with simply living. Apparently admitting that there
are people in the world that have problems means that people who haven’t
admitted they have problems are perfectly fine.
We can
all get angry, we can all do things that we don’t mean. We all disagree on many
things. Why is it that we can’t come to a consensus that we should look out for
each other? Why can’t we wear a mask? Why can’t we get the vaccine? Why can’t
we leave the gun at home? Why do we feel so vulnerable that we need to leave
the house with the gun? But leave the mask at home? Where did we fail as a
society?
I
prefer to think that I can leave my home and do anything that I want. I’m not worried
about some random person shooting me. I don’t think that those around me are
trying to kill me. However, I am concerned that I don’t know what I potentially
breathed in. I’m going to wear a mask because it is what is best for everyone
around me. I don’t think that my neighbor is trying to kill me, so I don’t keep
a gun next to my pillow.
Why is
it so essential to arm yourself to the teeth? Why can’t you do a small thing to
protect those around you? Have we lost faith in our fellow humans that we just
assume that everyone out there is trying to kill us?
I for
one am not willing to admit that all humans are inheritably bad. No, as
pessimistic as I am, I truly believe that there is a goodness to everyone. We
want to do the right thing, we’ve just been molded not to. We don’t question
things that don’t seem right, we just go along with it. That’s how it has always
been. We can accept that some of those things are okay, and other things we
accept as “okay” because its always been horrific, but eh, its still horrific.
I
suppose in conclusion, nothing will change until we are willing to work
together. It doesn’t matter ho much we disagree, we need to work together. We
are part of the same planet, we are part of the same ecosystem. If we don’t
work together, we are all doomed, the world will cease to exist as we know it.
And I think we need the world, but I could be wrong.
